Advantages of Vacuum Casting

01/

High accuracy and fine details: Vacuum casting should be your go-to. It’s known for great accuracy and sharp details. I’ve seen parts come out looking pretty much identical to the original model—almost like magic.

02/

Cost-effective for low-volume production: It’s cost-effective.If you’re only making a small batch, this is the way to go.

03/

Versatile material options: During the vacuum casting process, you’re not stuck with just one type of material. Whether you need abs-like plastics or clear resins, there’s a material for pretty much anything. It’s super versatile. From automotive parts to healthcare devices, this method fits the bill for a ton of industries.

04/

Superior surface finishes: With vacuum casting, your parts come out with a great finish, and if you want it to be even better, that’s where the surface finishing services come in.

Material choices

You have different material options. So you can test different materials to get the best one for your project.

Standard accuracy

The standard accuracy of vacuum casting is 0.3%. The lower limit is 0.3 millimeters for dimensions that are smaller than 100mm.

Minimum wall thickness

The 0.75-millimeter thickness of the wall is important to make sure that the mold is properly filled. To get better results 1.55-millimeter thickness is recommended.

Maximum part dimensions

The size is limited by the vacuum chamber’s dimensions.

Vacuum Casting Plastic Case

Features of Vacuum Casting

Vacuum casting is a process for creating low-volume, high-quality plastic or rubber parts, often mimicking injection-molded components. It involves pouring a liquid plastic into a silicone mold, which is created from a master pattern (often 3D printed), and then curing it under vacuum to eliminate air bubbles. This process is known for its ability to produce parts with excellent surface finishes, fine details, and good mechanical properties, making it suitable for prototyping and low-volume production.

Types of Vacuum Casting
1

Vacuum die casting

This method is typically used with aluminum, magnesium, or zinc alloys. It involves injecting molten metal into a mold under vacuum, resulting in dense, high-quality castings.

2

Vacuum low pressure casting

This technique is employed in precision casting of aluminum and magnesium alloy castings. It involves applying low pressure to fill the mold and then maintaining that pressure during solidification.

3

Urethane casting

This is the most common type of vacuum casting and is used for producing parts from polyurethane and other elastomers.

4

Centrifugal casting

While not strictly a vacuum casting method, centrifugal casting is another casting process that uses a rotating mold.

Application of Vacuum Casting

Prototype production

Vacuum casting is widely used for prototype production, especially in the design and testing stages of new products, which can quickly obtain various test samples. This is used for the rubber material products.

01

Customized parts

For small batches of customized parts, vacuum casting can quickly produce accurate replicas to meet personalized needs, both in plastic and rubber parts.

02

Art and Sculpture

Artists can use silicone replication technology to replicate sculptures or artworks for limited edition production or expanded creation.

03

Medical devices

In the medical equipment parts, silicone molds are used to create high-precision customized medical parts or surgical simulation models.

04

Toys and consumer goods

The toy and consumer goods industry also uses silicone molds for small batch production, quickly responding to market demand.

05

Production Process of Vacuum Casting

Master prototype production: We are using traditional processing, 3D printing service, or cnc machining methods to create the master prototype to be replicated.

Making silicone molds: Place the master prototype in a suitable square container, pour in liquid silicone, and solidify to form the mold. Because silicone has good flexibility, high temperature resistance, and chemical stability, making it very suitable for making molds with complex shapes.

Casting replication materials: After the silicone mold solidifies, various materials are used for casting to replicate parts that are highly similar to the prototype. Usually shenzhen strongd model use liquid plastic abs and PC material or rubber parts to make the vacuum casting parts.

Taking out from mould and post-processing: Remove the replica from the silicone mold and perform necessary polishing, cleaning, and surface treatment. If it is the enclosures outside parts, usually we need to painting and silk printing logo, so that the products surface looks perfect.

FAQ

Q: How does a vacuum casting work?

A: Vacuum casting uses a vacuum to evacuate air from the mold, resulting in smooth surface finishes and minimal defects.

Q: Is vacuum casting cheaper than 3D printing?

A: 3D printing is usually more cost-effective for small-volume production. As production volume increases, the cost per part decreases, making vacuum casting the more economical choice for larger batch production, even though the mold can only be used approximately 20 times before requiring a replacement.

Q: Is vacuum or centrifugal casting better?

A: Vacuum casting machines have great advantages for complex and high-quality designs, and are a relatively ideal choice. But if you don't have high quality requirements and need more efficient production work, then centrifugal casting may be more suitable for you.

Q: What is the tolerance of vacuum casting?

A: The tolerance of vacuum casting is usually from 0.3 mm but can depend on several factors. The type of plastic, part size, and part complexity can all influence the tolerance of a vacuum-cast part. Tolerances can vary on a case-by-case basis.

Q: What resin is used in vacuum casting?

A: The popular vacuum casting resins are ABS-like resins, PC-like resins, PPMA, and soft rubbers. Each of these resins offers unique properties and benefits for vacuum cast parts.Feb 23, 2024
